Design History and Culture

This module aims, in an integrated way, to provide students with a contextualised vision of the evolution of design culture, guided by the history of art and with special attention to graphic design in the context of post-industrial society.
Content will be approached from previous practices to design as a discipline - as the first prehistoric representations and the invention of the press / typography - but the focus of this module will be from the advent of design: The industrial revolution; the Arts & Crafts Movement; Art Nouveau and Art Deco; The Vanguards; Futurism; Modernism; Bauhaus, Ulm and Switzerland. Design and mass culture; Design and Counterculture; Postmodernism; Advent of the computer and digital design.
