Annual Film Course
Cinema was born just over a hundred years ago, the time of three or four generations. However, it has evolved at a dizzying speed ever since: in the stories it tells us, in the myriad of glances about the world it presents to us, or in its methods and technologies of production, distribution, and display. In the last twenty years, with the advent and popularization of digital, there has been no limit to the imagination and the production and production of more or less ambitious films, previously only imaginable through the use of complicated and extremely expensive techniques became available to all. However, for a public display in the classroom, on the television, or on the net, it is necessary to master all the narrative and production techniques that amateur camera manuals or editing programs that are already installed on computers do not teach. This is the purpose of this course: to learn all the fundamental techniques for film making and production: from story writing and narrative techniques to the direction of actors, but also those most closely related to technology: sound, image, lighting, assembly. But it is not enough to learn only the techniques: in order to master them, it is necessary to know the path that brought the cinema to the narratives and forms of production, distribution and exhibition of today. The history of cinema is thus a fundamental part of this course.
The method of study is that of learning to do, so students will begin at an early age to learn how to operate the lights, cameras and microphones, while developing creative writing and directing exercises for actors who come and discuss many films from different eras of the history of cinema and that learn the dynamics and rules of cinema financing in Europe and particularly in Portugal. From the very beginning, three films will be chosen from among the ideas proposed by the students, which will be developed, produced and carried out within the scope of the course, and the result will be presented to the public at the end of the academic year. There will also be master-classes of national and foreign professionals, linked to various areas of the film and audiovisual industry, which, with examples of some of their works, will share their experiences with the students.
This course is intended for all those who wish to get in touch with the main areas of the film production and realization chain, and to acquire the technical and theoretical tools that allow them to conceive, develop, produce and realize their films. It is also intended for those who wish to pursue a career in film and audiovisual production. Some of the course modules, such as those dedicated to the history of cinema, are also open to those who, not necessarily wanting to pursue achievement and production, only want to deepen their knowledge in this area.
